Visiting Walhalla

Last Monday the family and I went for a drive to Walhalla in Victoria.

It is such a cute town and is one of my husbands favorite places to visit this being our fourth trip.

The town itself is an old goldmining town discovering gold in the late 1850's and at the height of the town's population boom it boasted 4500 people. This might not seem a lot of people but Walhalla is tiny and set smack bang in the middle of mountain ranges.

The cemetary is situated on the top of a hill or should I say half way up the mountain would be a better description.

It is hard to imagine what life would have been like way back then and talking to some of the historic society folk it would not have been easy with poor water, freezing temperatures and scorching heat, the noise from the machinery was loud and operated 24hrs a day and only stopped for one day a week, the sabbath.
To go there now it is a quaint, quiet and idyllic town with cute cottages and lovely scenary. It really is like stepping back in time with the town only just having electricity put on only 20 years ago, hard to imagine in this day and age.
Ghost Tours are run and my husband wants to go along for this, I'm not sure i can convince the children to join him on the tour.

It is a lovely quaint town one that we will return to again I am sure, if you are wanting to visit a town that resembles peace and quiet and a sense of history why not make the visit.
Til next time
Happy Reading.
